| FP Marine Risks, as part of a team of six Australian shipping industry companies, last week won an award from the Australian Government at the ABARES Outlook 2012 conference. The award recognised the company’s role in arranging the return of contaminated soil that could have caused extensive damage to agriculture and the environment.
In May 2011, a group of Australian farmers purchased fertiliser from a supplier in China. When the shipment arrived, it became apparent that the fertiliser was in fact soil containing seeds, feathers and other contaminants that could have spread bacteria, viruses and other plant pathogens. Biosecurity officers in Australia took the shipment to Sydney whilst negotiations for the return of the soil ensued. As part of the return of the goods, FP Marine Risks was asked to find insurance to address the liabilities involved in shipping the cargo back to China. This was a particularly difficult and esoteric requirement but, working in cooperation with Australian insurers, an effective solution was put in place. The other shipping industry companies who were recognised were: Shipping Australia (the peak body for Australian shipping lines), ANL (the shipping line who carried the goods back to China), Qube Logistics (formerly P&O Trans Australia), DP World (who stored and transported the containers), and Sydney Ports (who waived port fees and charges). |
