Our maps highlight those countries and areas listed as Current Exclusions by the Joint War Risk Committee in London. In the opinion of the Committee, these are places more likely to be affected by War or Civil Disturbance, and which therefore represent a heightened risk to vessels. The Current Exclusions are amended on an ad hoc basis in response to changing political circumstances.
In practice this means that any vessel intending to maintain War Risk Insurance during a breach of the War Risk Trading Warranties (i.e. by sailing to a place listed as a Current Exclusion) is required to obtain prior agreement from War Risk underwriters and, if so required, pay an Additional Premium.
The map also details the prevailing Additional Premiums for each of the Excluded Countries and Areas. The validity of the indicated premium is customarily limited to 48 hours only. This means that quotations need to be agreed with Underwriter's within 48 hours of the time that a vessel is due to enter the Excluded Country or Area. The rate is expressed as a percentage of the vessel's sum insured for increments of 7-day periods either as a minimum, or for longer periods, pro-rata.
Where the map states that the rates are H/C or Held Covered this usually means that these are areas of greatest risk. Prevailing rates are therefore best described as On Application.
It is important to note that the rates posted on the site are indicative for a single voyage only and should be regarded as no more than guidelines. No account is made for multiple breaches by a vessel or vessels over time.
Although we endeavour to keep the posted rates updated as regularly as is practical, rates are subject to change without notice.
Should you have any vessel which is due to sail to or within the Territorial Waters of any of the Excluded Countries or Areas detailed, then please discuss the risk as soon as possible with your usual contact at FP Marine Risks. Whether you are an existing client for whom we currently arrange annual War Risk Insurance, or an owner who may be considering a breach of warranty, we will be pleased to negotiate the best possible terms with Underwriters.
Existing clients of FP Marine Risks receive e-mail alerts of amendments to the War Risk Trading Warranties. If you would like to receive these alerts then please advise your usual contact or e-mail us on info@fp-marine.com
